Compare 6 Resend alternatives for transactional email: Postmark, SendGrid, Mailgun, Amazon SES, Mailtrap and TickOS, with real 2026 prices, free plans and the cost of 50,000 emails a month.

Resend has become the default email API for many developers, and for good reasons: a clean API, a great developer experience and React Email. It isn't the only option, though, and depending on your volume, your stack or what else your product needs, another provider may fit better or cost less.

This guide compares six Resend alternatives for transactional email, with real prices checked in October 2026, free plans, and what 50,000 emails a month actually costs on each one.

What is transactional email?

Transactional email is the one-to-one email your app sends automatically when a user does something:

  • Password resets and magic sign-in links
  • Receipts, invoices and order confirmations
  • Account alerts and security notifications
  • Reminders and onboarding emails

It's different from marketing email (newsletters and campaigns sent to many people at once). Transactional emails are expected, time-sensitive and often critical: if a password reset lands in spam, the user can't log in.

Why look for a Resend alternative?

Resend is a strong product. Teams look elsewhere for a few common reasons:

  • Volume and cost. At high volume, a per-email provider like Amazon SES can be much cheaper.
  • Deliverability focus. Some teams prefer a provider that only does transactional email.
  • Free plan limits. Resend's free plan includes 3,000 emails a month with a limit of 100 per day.
  • Everything in one place. If you also need customer support, it can be simpler to send email and handle replies in the same platform.
  • Existing stack. Teams already on AWS or Twilio often stay with SES or SendGrid.

Resend's pricing, for reference

For transactional email, Resend's plans (October 2026) are:

Pro$2050,000None
Pro$35100,000None
ScaleFrom $90100,000+None

Extra emails cost $0.90 per 1,000 on Pro, and logs are kept for 30 days.

1. TickOS

Best for: products that want transactional email and customer support in the same platform.

TickOS includes an email API and an SMTP relay to send receipts, password resets, magic links and alerts from your own verified domain, with the same account you use for support tickets, a help center and broadcasts.

  • Pricing: Free includes 1,000 emails a month. Starter is $19/month ($15 on annual billing) with 50,000 emails, Pro $79/month with 200,000 and Enterprise $249/month with 800,000. Plans are flat per workspace, with unlimited teammates.
  • Highlights: REST API (POST /v1/emails) and SMTP relay on port 587, templates with variables, scheduling up to 30 days ahead, up to 5 attachments, open and click tracking, delivery and bounce status, and automatic suppression of addresses that keep bouncing.
  • The unique part: set the reply-to to your TickOS support inbox and customer replies to your transactional emails arrive as support tickets, in the same place your team already works.
  • Keep in mind: plans have daily and hourly limits to protect your domain's reputation (for example, 2,000 emails per day on Starter), and the monthly email allowance is shared with support replies and broadcasts.

2. Postmark

Best for: teams that care most about fast, reliable delivery of transactional email.

Postmark, from ActiveCampaign, has built its reputation on doing transactional email well, and keeps transactional and bulk sending in separate streams.

  • Pricing: a free developer plan with 100 emails per month. Paid plans start at $15/month for 10,000 emails (Basic), with extra emails at $1.80 per 1,000 on Basic and $1.30 on Pro.
  • Highlights: strong focus on delivery speed, 45 days of message history (up to 365 on higher plans) and good templates.
  • Keep in mind: it gets more expensive than others as volume grows, and the free plan is only for testing.

3. SendGrid

Best for: teams already using Twilio, or that want transactional and marketing email from one big provider.

SendGrid, part of Twilio, is one of the oldest and largest email platforms, with an email API, SMTP and a separate marketing campaigns product.

  • Pricing: new accounts get a 60-day free trial with up to 100 emails per day. The Essentials plan starts at $19.95/month for 50,000 emails, and Pro starts at $89.95/month for 100,000 emails with a dedicated IP.
  • Highlights: mature platform, many integrations and SDKs, and room for very high volume.
  • Keep in mind: there's no permanent free plan anymore, and the dashboard and settings can feel heavy for small projects.

4. Mailgun

Best for: developers who want flexible sending, routing and logs.

Mailgun, from Sinch, offers an email API and SMTP with features like inbound routing and email validation.

  • Pricing: a free plan with 100 emails per day. Basic starts at $15/month for 10,000 emails, Foundation at $35/month for 50,000 and Scale at $90/month for 100,000.
  • Highlights: powerful API, inbound email routing and detailed analytics on higher plans.
  • Keep in mind: log retention is short on lower plans (1 day on Free and Basic, 5 days on Foundation).

5. Amazon SES

Best for: high volume at the lowest possible cost, for teams comfortable with AWS.

Amazon Simple Email Service is the raw infrastructure behind many email products. It's extremely cheap, but you build most of the experience yourself.

  • Pricing: $0.10 per 1,000 emails, plus $0.12 per GB of attachments. New AWS accounts get Free Tier credits. Dedicated IPs cost extra.
  • Highlights: the lowest price per email at scale, and native integration with the rest of AWS.
  • Keep in mind: new accounts start in a sandbox and must request production access. Templates, logs, bounce handling and dashboards take setup on your side.

6. Mailtrap

Best for: teams that want to test emails safely and send them from the same tool.

Mailtrap started as an email testing sandbox and now also offers an email API and SMTP for sending.

  • Pricing: a free plan with 4,000 emails a month (up to 150 per day). Basic plans are $15/month for 10,000 emails, $20 for 50,000 and $30 for 100,000; Business plans start at $85/month.
  • Highlights: a generous free plan, low prices at mid volume and built-in email testing.
  • Keep in mind: the cheapest plans are aimed at smaller senders; higher-volume features sit in Business.

What 50,000 emails a month actually costs

The cheapest plan that covers 50,000 transactional emails a month:

ProviderPlanCost / month
Amazon SESPay as you go~$5 + attachments
TickOSStarter (annual)$15 ($19 monthly)
SendGridEssentials$19.95
ResendPro$20
MailtrapBasic$20
MailgunFoundation$35
Postmark10,000 plan + overage~$66–$87

Postmark doesn't publish a 50,000-email plan; the estimate is its 10,000-email price plus the overage rate for the remaining 40,000. Amazon SES is the cheapest by far, but it doesn't include the dashboard, templates and logs the others give you out of the box.

How to choose

  • You want the cheapest price per email and have AWS experience: Amazon SES.
  • Deliverability is everything and you don't mind paying more: Postmark.
  • You're already on Twilio or need very high volume: SendGrid.
  • You need inbound routing and flexible APIs: Mailgun.
  • You want testing and sending together with a generous free plan: Mailtrap.
  • You also need customer support, and want replies to your emails to become tickets: TickOS.
  • You love the developer experience and React Email: stay with Resend.

How to switch providers safely

  1. Verify your domain with the new provider and add its SPF and DKIM records. Keep a DMARC record in place.
  2. Use a subdomain (for example mail.yourcompany.com) if you want to keep transactional sending separate from your main email.
  3. Swap the integration. With SMTP, change the host, port, username and password. With an API, replace the send call.
  4. Send a test to Gmail and Outlook accounts and check that SPF, DKIM and DMARC pass.
  5. Move traffic gradually if you send a lot, starting with less critical emails.
  6. Keep the old provider active for a few days in case you need to roll back.

Here's what the switch looks like with the TickOS email API:

terminal
Bash
01curl https://api.tickos.dev/v1/emails \
02 -H 'Authorization: Bearer sk_your_api_key' \
03 -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
04 -d '{
05 "from": "hello@yourdomain.com",
06 "from_name": "Acme",
07 "to": ["jane@example.com"],
08 "subject": "Reset your password",
09 "html": "<p>Click the link below to reset your password.</p>"
10 }'
UTF-8 · LF · Bashtickos.dev
